Attending School is the Law
In Wisconsin, all students are required to attend school regularly. Each student will be allowed 10 excused absences per year, which includes family vacations, illness, etc. If a student has a medical note, the absence will not be counted against his/her attendance. Any absences beyond the 10 excused will be considered unexcused absences unless a doctor’s note is provided. The School District of Ladysmith must record student attendance every day school is in session.
Excused Absences - Wisconsin Statutes 118.15, 118.16 and 120.13 are specific about attendance and what may be considered an excused absence. By Wisconsin Statute and school board policy, all students between ages 6-18, are required to attend an educational program. Absences for the following reasons may be excused:
1. A bonafide religious holiday.
2. The student is not in physical or mental condition to attend school.
3. Non-emergency medical appointments accompanied by a verified appointment slip from your provider. (We ask that these be scheduled for non-class times)
4. A death in the immediate family.
5. An illness in the immediate family, which requires the attendance of the student.
6. A court appearance or other legal procedure which requires the attendance of the student.
7. Quarantine by the public health official.
8. School busing delays beyond the control of the student.
9. A family trip (pre-planned absence form completed). Trips without parents are not excused.
10. Approved school activities.
Parent’s should report their student’s absences to the school any day students are unable to attend (preferably prior to the start of the school day). They may report the absences by calling the school attendance line, or in Skyward.
MEDICAL VERIFICATION IS NEEDED WITHIN 48 HOURS OF AN APPOINTMENT OR THE OFFICE WILL CONSIDER IT AN UNEXCUSED ABSENCE
Parents/guardians have two school days to excuse absences. After two school days, all absences will remain unexcused, regardless if information is provided.
PARENTS CAN AND SHOULD MONITOR THEIR STUDENT’S ATTENDANCE in Skyward.
